However, the little foxes were too small to reach the grape bunches so they would chew on the vines and it would kill the whole vine. Instead of the farmer just losing his crop, he would lose his vine which was more disastrous. Spiritually some things we do or allow that we might think is little or insignificant can also be disastrous for us.

About Us

Mission

Who We Are

The Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery is one of more than 80 units in the National Fish Hatchery System administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Service also manages over 475 national wildlife refuges and major fish and wildlife research laboratories across the country. As the Nation’s primary steward of fish and wildlife resources, the Service provides leadership in habitat and wetlands protection; fish and wildlife research and technical assistance; and in the conservation and protection of migratory birds, anadromous fishes, certain marine mammals, and threatened and endangered species.

What We Do

Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior, this National Fish Hatchery is one of many serving a vital role in the management of our country’s fishery resources.

Construction of a dam, regardless of its type, alters the entire environment within the river. The first and most obvious change takes place when the reservoir fills, but many changes may also take place below the dam. Some changes might be subtle, and others, like those in the Greers Ferry tailwaters, might be quite drastic. Greers Ferry Dam produces a large, deep reservoir in which the water stratifies into temperature layers during the summer. The water released into Little Red River comes from a deep, cool layer. The cool water released through the dam caused a loss of the original warm-water fish habitat and replaced it with the present cold tailwater.

The Greers Ferry Hatchery was established in 1965 to produce rainbow trout for restocking the cold tailwaters below Greers Ferry and other U.S. Corps of Engineers water projects (dams) located in Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, and neighboring states. In cooperation with the State game and fish agencies, we distribute about 220,000 pounds of trout each year to suitable waters in Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. The hatchery’s water supply comes from Greers Ferry Reservoir at a depth of more than 100 feet below the water surface.

The temperature at this depth is cold the year round, ranging between 44° and 56°F. After the water is aerated to add oxygen, it flows through the hatchery at rates up to 12,000 gallons per minute.

How We Do It

Greers Ferry does not have any adult trout for breeding purposes. The hatchery receives fertilized eggs from other Federal hatcheries, called broodstock hatcheries. Currently we receive eggs from Erwin NFH in Tennessee and Ennis NFH in Montana.

Eggs are received and incubated in the juvenile fish rearing area of the hatchery building from August through March. At this stage the fish are extremely vulnerable<s>,</s> and we ask that visitors do not touch anything while in this area.

As the eggs hatch and the yolk sacs are absorbed, the young trout swim up from the bottom of the troughs and are fed commercial fish food 5-6 times a day. When they reach a size of approximately 2–3 inches (5-6 months old), the fingerling trout are transferred outside to the raceways.

In the raceway area, the fish are fed and cared for until they reach the 11-inch stocking size (approximately 20 months old). Feeding activities range from twice a day for the larger fish to 4–5 times daily for the smaller sizes.

Throughout the year fish are harvested from the raceways and distributed by truck for stocking in tailwaters and reservoirs in Arkansas and surrounding states. Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery stocks approximately 1 million rainbow trout annually. Hopefully, we are providing you with the subject for your next “big fish story.”

Everything good that we have been blessed with in our society here in the U.S.A., comes directly or indirectly, from God’s grace and the Bible’s influence. You may think this a bold statement to make but I am prepared to defend it. One of the things that I am sure that grieves the heart of God, is the fact that instead of people being grateful for all the blessings God has bestowed upon mankind, many blame Him and His followers for the problems in the world.

In our society it seems popular to criticize Christians and blame them for things that really are not their fault. They are even lumped in the same category with cults and weird sects. People should realize there are things that are said and done in the name of Christianity that are not Christian at all. The Bible even warns us of people like that who actually hurt the cause of Christ. In this article when I speak of Christian or Christianity, I am referring to the true believer and the true followers of Christ.

Many people do not realize what the Bible and Christian influence has accomplished for the betterment of our lives, especially here in the United States. They walk around enjoying the good life with its abundance here in free America, without understanding they owe it all to a book they have been taught by many to despise — the Bible. Even some countries who have embraced false religions are blessed in aspects of their societies where they are practicing scriptural principles. The keeping of God’s Word always brings blessing.

It is a well-known fact that our founding fathers in the USA were, for the most part, godly men who took the Bible’s principles to construct our Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Any unbiased historian knows that the Bible has had a much greater influence in the shaping of the foundation of this nation than is being currently taught in our schools. Let us look at some of these influences that we could lose if we fail to acknowledge God and bring Him back in the national life.

On February 9, the Corps of Engineers held a public workshop at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center to discuss the proposed campground closings. Local residents showed up to voice questions and concerns over the impact of closing campgrounds on local business and tourism. According to information available at the center, other changes are being proposed on top of possible closings. These include a reduction of summer park ranger hours from 40 to 24 hours per week, a reduction of attendant contracts, and a reduction in other park services.

When asked about the selection of certain sites to close, Corps Public Affairs Specialist Laurie T. Driver said that the proposed site closings were for those sites on Greers Ferry Lake that saw little to no use. Closing these sites shouldn’t have much of an impact since they are rarely if ever used during the tourist season. Many of these sites are in older, less developed wooded areas and in areas that are frequently closed due to flooding. She also stated that opening areas to private concessionaires is an idea they may be willing to look at in the future.

The lengthy list of proposed closings around the state did not include any closings on Beaver Lake. When asked about this, Driver said that this was due to the efforts of a local organization called the Ozark Rivers Heritage Foundation (ORHF). The ORHF enters into cooperative agreements with the Corps to help fund park recreational facilities. According to their website, ORHF “is financed through product sales, fees, and donations.” The organization then uses that money to help maintain and enhance parks owned by the corps. Driver stated that the Corps would love to see local organizations such as these grow and continue to help make the park system a viable tourism destination. Information on OHRF can be found at www.tablerockdamtours.com/ozarks-rivers-heritage-foundation.

he reminiscing about the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad the other day has brought a gratifying amount of comment from people who were acquainted with it. The railroad, remember, ran from Helena, through Kensett, Searcy, Higden, Harrison and Eureka Springs, to Joplin, Mo. After enjoying a wobbly running out of the Delta up through the Ozarks, it finally died of financial difficulties.

A Pine Bluff reader advances his theory as to why the railroad had to collapse: “The M and NA was doomed at the start,” he writes. “When it was organized, Jay Gould, the big railroad tycoon, was not included or consulted. The M and NA was originally projected to terminate at the Gulf Coast, but ended at Helena. Gould proceeded to parallel the M and NA with his building of the White River Division of the Missouri Pacific system, thereby diverting much business from the M and NA.”

A Little Rock man who was once a traveling salesman in the northwest Arkansas area has some interesting thoughts on the M and NA. “Your column re: the ‘rural railroad’ brings back memories of when I first started traveling Arkansas. “You mention that the road was known as the ‘M and NA’ for Missouri and North Arkansas. One name applied by the traveling men of those early days was ‘May Never Arrive,’ and in the days before even fair gravel roads, to say nothing of freeways or paved roads, about the only way you could go from Helena to Harrison was to ride the ‘May Never Arrive,’ and it was usually late.

I recall one winter night when the train was scheduled to come into Harrison from Missouri, and the ‘chair car’ with a woodburning stove for heat was well filled with traveling men. I was among them. The engine of the train broke down at Alpena, and we sat in the car for several hours. The weather necessitated chucking more wood in the stove and we burned up all there was in the wood box in our car. When the fire died down it began to get cold. Some brave souls went outside and tore boards off the side of the station and broke them up to rebuild the fire in the train.

“As you explained, the train stopped along the road for lunch and one story told by traveling men about one of the eating places was that travelers went across the dirt road to a boarding house and the old lady who operated the house stood guard at one end of the table with a freshly cut sassafras limb with green leaves on it which she swayed back and forth over the table to keep the flies away…”

That’s a very welcome and informative letter. It adds several valuable sidelights to the history of the rural railroad. The only question I have about the traveling salesmen who were delayed on the winter evening at Alpena is this: Why did they bother to tear the boards off the station? I looks like it would have been much more reasonable, and easier on the railroad, if they had just gone up and borrowed a few lumps of coal from the engine. On the M and NA the engine couldn’t have been too far away. vvv
