Welcome to
Greers Ferry, located on the shores
of the lake that shares it's name,
Greers Ferry Lake.
With over 40,000 acres of crystal
clear water that is perfect for
fishing,
scuba diving, waterskiing, and
boating, it is no wonder that Greers
Ferry has become one of
Arkansas'
most popular tourist destinations
for family vacations and group
travel.
Fishermen associate
Greers Ferry
Lake
with walleye fishing. A national
walleye tournament is held on
Greers
Ferry
Lake
every year. The world record walleye
weighing more than 22 pounds was
caught here. The largemouth and
smallmouth bass, the spotted or
Kentucky
bass, the striped bass/white bass
hybrids, the lake trout, crappie and
bream are all species found in the
lake.
The new world's record hybrid
bass weighing 27 pounds, 5 ounces
was caught on
Greers
Ferry
Lake
by a local guide in April 1997. He
fought the fish for 25 minutes.
Jerry Shaum of Shirley knew he had a
huge fish on the line. He held on
until the battle was won. He was
trolling in 45 feet of water.
The Little Red River feeds
Greers
Ferry
Lake. A world-class
fishery for brown trout and rainbow
trout, the Little Red River produced
another world record fish: a
40-pound, 4-ounce brown trout, in
1992, beating the earlier record
catches of 28 to 29 pounds.
The dam and reservoir were dedicated
Oct. 3, 1963 by President John F.
Kennedy. It was his last major
public appearance before his final
trip to
Dallas on
Nov. 22, 1963. In his remarks in
Heber Springs, Kennedy explained
that the Greers Ferry project and
others
like it were investments in
Arkansas
and the
Nation’s
future.
Once
Greers
Ferry
Lake
had filled, tourism boomed. New
businesses catered to tourists, and
older businesses expanded. The
reservoir that filled behind it
consists of two lakes connected by a
water-filled gorge called the
Narrows. The area of the
two lakes and the
Narrows
totals about 40,500 acres with a
combined shoreline of just over 340
miles.
Construction of the powerhouse and
switchyard was completed in July
1964. The total cost of the project
was approximately $46.5 million.
For most of the
20th century this area was just
another lovely section of
Arkansas with small
towns connected by trails and dirt
roads, but in 1963
Greers
Ferry
Lake
became a reality. The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers completed
construction of a dam (spanning the
Little Red River), which is 1,704
feet in length and 243 feet in
height, forming a lake 50 miles
long, covering 40,000 acres, and
creating a shoreline of 343 miles.
Our river tributaries produce some
of the largest walleye in the world,
supporting a major event -- the
Walleye Run. Elevation of the lake
at top flood control pool is 487
feet above mean sea level. Most
important is that the lake ranks as
one of the most pollution-free in
the nation, providing an excellent
water playground for fishermen,
water skiers, scuba divers, and
anyone seeking fun in the sun. As
the seventh tourist destination
point in
Arkansas,
the lake is dotted with first-rate
marinas and boat docks, over 1,200
public and private camp sites, and a
good selection of motel and resort
facilities.

Greers
FerryLake
and it's tail water, the Little Red
River has been a popular destination
for anglers worldwide visiting
Arkansas. In
our case, "World-Class Fishing" is
fact, not hype. We can back it up
with three world-record game fish.
Greers
Ferry
Lake holds world
records for Walleye (22 lb 11oz) and
Hybrid Striped Bass (27 lb 5 oz).
The Little Red River tail water,
which feeds into
Greers
Ferry
Lake, holds the
current world-record for German
Brown Trout (40 lb 4 oz).
